As was mentioned before, each team is required to have eleven members on the field at one time, and, because the game is the way it is (with unlimited substitutions), each player is known to have a specialty, or a position. The three basic positions are offense, defense and special. Offense players play to advance the team toward a touchdown, and they are mainly the quarterback, the receiver, the linemen, the tight ends, and the backs. The defense players of the team play to STOP the other team from scoring or even a first down, and they are mainly the defensive ends and the defensive tackles, as well as safeties, linebackers and cornerbacks. The special players (though no longer commonly used in today’s American football) are known as the football teams’ most versatile players, as they can play both offensive and defensive positions; they are there for the free kicks, punts, extra points, and attempts for field goals. Special players are assigned to smaller units – punting, kick return, field goal, field goal block, and punt blocking.
There are many types of players within a single football team, and to be sure, each team can easily have more than forty players in each team, with every one of them playing a very unique role for the team, whether they are offensive, defensive or special. In this section of the site, we will be providing you with a listing of all possible positions in football teams – because this is where we will be posting all existing NFL football teams, their stats, and the stats and positions of their players. There is nothing up here yet, but we ask you to check back for updates.
